Pasadena Police say it happened at the Bubba’s 33 restaurant located at 3221 Beltway 8 NB.
According to police, they received multiple 911 calls starting at 8:13 p.m. of a shooting inside the restaurant.
One person was shot and later succumbed to his injuries. Another person, an employee of the restaurant, sustained a non-life-threatening injury from a stray bullet and was taken to a hospital.
Police say citizens tried to subdue the suspect after the shooting but were unsuccessful and he fled the scene in a vehicle.
A couple, who asked not to be identified, was inside Bubba’s 33 for a date night when gunfire broke out Friday night.
They told KPRC 2 they were watching the Astros game — and getting frustrated as the Rangers took the lead — when they suddenly heard what sounded like balloons popping. Moments later, they saw a man with a gun rushing toward another customer.
The husband said he grabbed his wife and ran into the kitchen, where they hid inside a freezer with two Bubba’s employees. They stayed there for five to ten minutes as roughly six gunshots rang out.
When they came out, he described chaos: families trying to find one another, children yelling for siblings, and people running next door to Saltgrass Steakhouse for safety.
“It was traumatizing,” he told KPRC 2’s Zorrie Jones. “Those bullets could have hit anyone. There were so many kids in there.”
The couple declined to appear on camera but said they’re still trying to process what happened and are taking things day by day.
Police say it appears the suspect and the victim knew each other.
On Saturday afternoon, Pasadena PD announced that the suspected shooter had been taken into custody.
Kenneth Leon Scott Jr., 48, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
