The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Greenhouse Road and Hollyhock Drive.
Sgt. Beaty with HCSO’s vehicular crimes division shared preliminary details, saying the officer was going northbound to respond to a mental health call, so it did not require lights and sirens.
That’s when another driver, going southbound, crashed into the officer’s patrol car, causing it to flip before landing on its roof.
It’s unclear how the driver hit the officer, but a witness said the other driver ran a red light before crashing into the deputy.
Sgt. Beaty also said the deputy suffered visible head injuries, though they did not appear to be life-threatening. He was still taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Meanwhile, the other driver had some pain in their shoulder but declined to be taken to the hospital.
At this time, Sgt. Beaty said the driver will not face any criminal charges.
