Eastex Freeway at Beltway 8 reopens after deadly 3-vehicle crash

HOUSTON – The eastbound lanes of the Eastex Freeway has reopened following a deadly three-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon, according to Houston TranStar.

The multi-vehicle crash was reported at 1:33 p.m. on the westbound lanes of IH-10 at Beltway 8-East.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office confirmed at least one person died in the crash.

Details of crash

Investigators learned that a box truck was traveling on the East Freeway when it began having engine issues. When the driver of the box truck reduced speeds to about 15 mph, two vehicles swerved to avoid striking the box truck.

Investigators said the driver of a Chevy Silverado truck also attempted to swerve to avoid the box truck but struck the truck. The front passenger of the Chevy was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevy was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons.

No other reported injuries. None of the drivers showed signs of intoxication.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez had estimated the roadway would be closed for at least several more hours and diverted all traffic to the Dell Dell exit.

According to Houston TranStar, all lanes reopened at 5:46 p.m.
