$14M worth of meth found hidden inside bell peppers, cucumbers at Texas border

A shipment labeled as fresh bell peppers and cucumbers was hiding over $14 million worth of methamphetamine, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Officers intercepted the shipment at the Pharr International Bridge, uncovering more than 1,600 pounds of the drug concealed among the produce.

The bust happened on April 11, when officers referred a tractor-trailer crossing from Mexico for further inspection. Using non-intrusive inspection tools and a canine team, officers found 300 packages of methamphetamine concealed inside the trailer.

In total, the drugs weighed more than 1,635 pounds.

“Our CBP officers continue to use all tools and resources to safeguard our borders by preventing these harmful narcotics from reaching America’s streets,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez.

CBP seized both the trailer and the drugs. A criminal investigation is now underway, led by special agents with Homeland Security Investigations.
