HOUSTON – Ramadan began over the weekend and thousands of Muslims will be fasting during this time —abstaining from eating and drinking— from sunrise to sunset (yes, even water) several restaurants are offering deals and specials to those observing the Islamic holy month.
EXPLAINER: What is Ramadan and how do Muslims observe the Islamic holy month?
In the simplest terms, Ramadan is an Islamic holiday (like Lent) and is a time of increased worship, reflection, charity, and good deeds. Socially, it also brings families and friends together in festive gatherings to break their fast. A close friend of mine once described it as having Thanksgiving dinner every day for 30 days.
Houston, which prides itself on having a sizeable Muslim population and enough halal restaurants to cover just about any cuisine, is for that reason offering specials for residents starting their fast (suhoor) or breaking their fast (iftar).
