Cleanup ongoing after sulfur dioxide leak following fatal crash in San Jacinto County

F.M. 1725 remains closed between Dabney Bottom Road and Gale Haven Road as cleanup continues after a sulfur dioxide leak following a fatal crash in San Jacinto County. It happened in San Jacinto County on F.M. 1725 on Friday.

This leak also sent at least 29 students and a bus driver to the hospital after they drove through the area.

Authorities say the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. when a northbound 18-wheeler went off the road and overturned. Tragically, the driver, 54-year-old Michael Rider of Buna, died at the scene.

The truck was carrying around 2,800 gallons of sulfur dioxide, a dangerous chemical that can cause breathing problems, skin irritation, and eye damage. As a precaution, a shelter-in-place order was issued for 60 to 80 homes nearby.
