Westbound lanes of SH-99/Grand Parkway near East Hardy have reopened following a seven-vehicle crash caused by black ice early Thursday morning.
The crash was first reported just after 6 a.m., leading to the closure of all westbound lanes between the Hardy Toll Road and the North Freeway (I-45). Crews worked throughout the day to address icy conditions and clear the wreckage, allowing traffic to resume hours earlier than the initial 3 p.m. estimate.
Traffic had been diverted to the I-45 northbound exit while TxDOT crews worked to de-ice the roadway. Officials confirmed that several people involved in the crash were transported to local hospitals by EMS, though no updates on their conditions have been provided.
The icy conditions were the result of a hard freeze that blanketed the Houston area overnight, creating hazardous road conditions for morning commuters. Meteorologists predict that sunshine and rising temperatures will help thaw icy patches across the city by this afternoon, but drivers are urged to remain cautious, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
Tune in for for real-time updates, alternate routes, and live traffic coverage.
