The sheriff’s office said it happened in the 15100 block of Golden Eagle Drive around 3:55 a.m.

Caples reported that his black sedan had been stolen from an apartment complex.

He took his wife’s gray SUV and chased the stolen vehicle.

Caples said the suspect did not stop, so he shot into the car and struck the suspect. He then crashed the sedan into a parked vehicle.

The suspect was later found dead by deputies. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez identified the person who died as 17-year-old Darnell Cotton.

There was also an unknown passenger in the black sedan, who ran away from the car with a backpack.

Caples was later arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail.
