Mom’s ex-boyfriend accused of shooting 12-year-old to death in east Harris County

HOUSTON – Officials have named the suspect they say is responsible for murdering 12-year-old Carlos Fernandez Monday inside his family’s east Harris County apartment.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez posted on X that the suspect is 27-year-old Terry Bryan Rivera.

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the shooter went up to the young boy’s bedroom window in Cloverleaf and opened fire where Carlos was sleeping, killing him.

Carlos’ two little sisters, his mother and another man were inside, but were not hurt.

“Rivera was in a previous dating relationship with the victim’s mother and had two children with her,” Sheriff Gonzalez revealed Wednesday night.

Investigators said they recovered the grey pickup truck believed to be used by Rivera when the shooting occurred.

He has been charged with capital murder.

Rivera has a lengthy criminal history, and pled guilty earlier this year to terroristic threat.

After being fired from a renovation job in May of last year, he hit someone with his car during an argument about money, according to Harris County court records. He also made a series of threats after being repeatedly asked to leave.

Records also show Rivera spent eight months in jail ten years ago after pleading guilty to assaulting a family member. Those records indicate he put his hands around the victim’s neck and applied pressure.

Sheriff Gonzalez warned Rivera should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the HCSO Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).

The family said they plan to lay Gonzales to rest on March 11.
