Officials urge people to avoid roads near Lakewood Church as authorities continue shooting investigation

HOUSTON – The Houston Police Department urged people to avoid the area near and on the Southwest Freeway service road near Lakewood Church for several hours as they investigated deadly the shooting at the mega church.

The department said traffic was very heavy near and on the service road around 2 p.m.

Various law enforcement agencies responded to Lakewood Church after a woman reportedly opened fire in the church’s main lobby around 2 p.m., just before it’s Spanish-speaking service.

The woman was shot to death by officers. A child that possibly came with the shooter was also shot and taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police said. A man was also struck in the leg by gunfire.

It is not clear if the victims were injured by officers or the shooting suspect.
