Major hard freeze headed to Houston

EUROPEAN MODEL FORECAST

HOUSTON – You can see above that next Tuesday morning, January 16th, some of the coldest arctic air we’ve had in more than a year arrives. In fact, 2023 didn’t even have a freezing temperature in Houston! That’s about to change.

A cold front moving through the area on Martin Luther King Day will bring a chance of rain and/or winter precipitation, but also behind it usher in very cold arctic air. We’ll see many areas with a “hard freeze” which by definition is 2 hours or more at 24° or below. Here are Tuesday morning and Tuesday afternoon:

Note that the American model is not on board with this yet, but we’ll have to watch and track this system closely as it moves our way.
