HISD board votes to keep Jack Yates principal after she was relieved of duties in December

HOUSTON – The Houston Independent School District has voted to keep a principal who was recently relieved of her duties.

School officials announced the decision late Thursday night during a board meeting.

Principal Tiffany Guillory will in fact keep her position at Jack Yates Senior High School, despite the earlier decision to let her go due to a ‘personnel matter.’

Guillory has been employed by the district for two decades and has held this title since 2018.

After the announcement of her departure back in December, students themselves took to social media and even planned to stage a walkout in protest of the decision. The following day, the fire alarm on campus was pulled seemingly as part of that plan.

Notable Yates Alum, American journalist Roland Martin, who says he has donated thousands of dollars to the high school’s communications program demanded Guillory remain in the position.

“Many folks would love to have my money but I prefer to leave it in HISD,” Martin said. “If you make this move and fire her, you’re making a great mistake.”

The board ultimately voted 6-3 in favor of keeping Guillory in office. It is unclear exactly when she will officially resume her role.
