Man shoots mother’s boyfriend because he believed she was being mistreated, police say

HOUSTON – A search is underway for a man accused of shooting his mother’s boyfriend during an altercation in north Houston.

The incident happened around 10:35 p.m. Friday at a home on East 28th Street near the North Loop, authorities said.

According to police, 50-year-old Hilario Melo was in a vehicle at the residence when he was confronted by 21-year-old Andrew Martinez.

Melo and Martinez’s mother had been dating and Martinez believed his mother was being mistreated, police said.

Authorities said Martinez initiated a fight and demanded Melo get out of the vehicle. When he refused, Martinez opened fire through the passenger window. Melo was hit in the chest, right arm and abdomen and was transported to a hospital, authorities said.

Martinez fled the scene in a white Dodge Ram pickup truck.
