HOUSTON – A dozen students from Houston were stuck in the massive winter storm that hit the East Coast.
"We're giving each other makeovers, we're playing Uno, we're eating, we're eating a lot," said one student.
The students from Incarnate Word Academy arrived in Washington, D.C., on Sunday for a school trip to learn about the democratic process.
The group was supposed to leave Friday, but Mother Nature forced a change of plans and they took shelter in a hotel.
"We didn't know if we were going to have food available because by the time we realized our flight was canceled that was Friday. At that time, the stores had been cleared out of food," Principal Leslie Flickinger said.
Flickinger called parents to let them know and the students found what they could for snacks.
"We spend about $200 at a CVS pharmacy and got the last jar of peanut butter and I think three loaves of bread and a couple things of Pop Tarts," Flickinger said.
The group was expected to fly back to Houston Monday night and arrive early Tuesday.
Students from Katy High School are also stranded in D.C. The mother of student Alison Fisher sent a photo to KPRC 2 News.
Fisher and her classmates are expected to be back in Houston on Monday as well.
