Group uses Facebook to bring food to local firefighters

HOUSTON – Steak night is a good night in the Gordon household, but tonight’s cuts of meat aren’t for Justin Gordon or his family.

These are for the firefighters at HFD Station 31.

“My daughter and I delivered a Christmas card to Fire Station 31 and said that as our Christmas gift to them, we’d like to bring them steaks every month to the various different shifts that they have,” Gordon said.

That was nearly two years ago and they’ve kept it going ever since.

Friends, family and neighbors have joined them in their monthly mission.

“People bring pastries, they bring ice cream, rolls, stuffed jalapenos, green bean casserole, all sorts of things,” Gordon said.

In fact, they were even able to expand thanks to his friend Laura and her family’s commercial kitchen across the street from another fire station.

Gordon said he "talked to her about it and see if she wouldn’t mind kind of spearhead(ing) that fire station and she’s been delivering awesome goodies from her kitchen from day one."

At 5 p.m., it’s time for delivery and Gordon, along with four others, show up, food in hand.

“They’re always really excited. They’re super friendly. They’re amazing with the kids. I mean, it’s great,” Gordon said. “They put their lives on the line for us and they also have to see some pretty gruesome stuff as well. So I think that even if it’s just once a month it’s a nice thing that the community can do just to say thanks.”

Gordon hopes to turn this monthly event into a nonprofit so he can help spread the movement to other fire stations.
