Elkins High School student in blackface sparks outrage

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – People were outraged after a photo of a girl wearing an Elkins High School T-shirt in blackface made rounds on social media.

"It started off on Snapchat, and then it went to Twitter,” Keya Milton, senior at Elkins High School, said.

Someone sent the photo to her and several of her friends. In fact, someone even sent the picture to the Channel 2 newsroom.

Keya says it quickly spread, and a lot of students are upset.

"It's a really diverse school, everyone is really close to each other, and so when stuff like this happens, everyone gets involved, and a lot of people are really upset,” Milton said.

Fort Bend ISD administrators released a statement about the picture:

“A social media post was brought to the attention of Elkins High School administrators this afternoon. Administrators learned that the photo was taken off campus several weeks ago, and they will continue to follow up to take appropriate action.”

It's unclear if the student in the photo faces disciplinary action.

Keya said this girl in the photo is a sophomore.

Others have reached out to her, but she apparently doesn't want to talk about it.

The student's Twitter account went from public to private. Now, it's been deleted.

"That's really offensive to us, and that's not okay. It's really offensive," Milton said.
