Man accused of deadly wrong-way crash appears in court

Deadly wrong-way crash on West Loop in SW Houston

HOUSTON – A man accused of causing a deadly crash Saturday appeared before a judge for the first time overnight.

Daniel Armando Mena, 21, is charged with intoxication manslaughter after police said he crashed head-on into another vehicle, killing the woman in that vehicle.

"A vehicle driving the right way saw the defendant coming head on, swerved to avoid the defendant. Upon doing so, the vehicle behind that car did not see the defendant coming and there was a head-on collision," a prosecutor said.

Police said Mena was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the 610 West Loop near Beechnut when he crashed head-on into a GMC Acadia.

Prosecutors said Mena's eyes were bloodshot and officers could smell alcohol coming from his breath. Mena was on bond for a previous DWI before prosecutors said he drove drunk early Saturday morning.

Family members identified the victim as 27-year-old Brenda Moreno.  A GoFundMe page for her family says she leaves behind her husband Ignacio and two young boys.

Mena's bond is set at $50,000.
