Two people dead after shooting in southwest Houston, police say

HOUSTON – Two people are dead after a shooting in southwest Houston, police said.

According to authorities, the shooting happened around 3 a.m. Monday at a home on Hendon Lane near Leawood Boulevard.

Police said neighbors reported hearing gunshots.

When authorities arrived, they said they found two men dead on the home’s porch from apparent gunshot wounds.

Authorities identified one of the men as Travis Cary, 52, who they say lived at the home.

According to authorities, Cary had been talking with an unknown woman for several minutes prior to the shooting.

When she left, two black men approached Cary while he was still on the porch and a fight ensued, police said. During the fight, Cary and one of the men were shot, according to police.

The other man fled the scene in a newer model, silver Nissan Murano or Rogue that was parked nearby on Leawood, officers said.

Cary’s family members said they are devastated and don’t know why anyone would do this to the 52-year-old father.

“He was always laughing, happy-go-lucky, the life of the party,’ said the victim's aunt, Crystal Neal. “Everybody loved him.”

Maribel Molina said that neighbors considered Cary to be the ‘watchman’ of the neighborhood.

“You could count on him for anything,” Molina said.

Investigators are working to learn more details about the shooting and what may have led up to it.

Josh Horn with Houston Police Homicide Division said they are still looking for the second suspect and will review surveillance video in the area. He said that the victim was shot multiple time in the face and chest area.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
