HOUSTON – A family is shaken and their dog is recovering after it was shot during a home invasion in southeast Houston.
The incident happened around 12:45 a.m. Friday at a home on Sagewick Drive near the Beltway and Sabo Road, police said.
Investigators said four men in masks forced their way into the house through the back door, which leads into the kitchen.
The father was in the kitchen and the intruders pinned him down and one held him at gunpoint while the others ransacked the home, police said.
During the robbery, the family dog ran to rescue the father but one of the gunmen opened fire, hitting the dog twice, authorities said.
The mother and three children heard the commotion and came to investigate, but the intruders yelled at them to get back in their rooms, authorities said.
According to police, one of the sons jumped out of the window and ran to the neighbor's house to call for help.
Before police could arrive, the intruders fled the scene on foot, authorities said. The father grabbed his gun and tried to chase after them, but it was too late, police said.
The dog was rushed to the vet, received emergency care and is back with the family recovering from the injuries.
Officers said the thieves made off with cash and a cellphone.
No one was hurt during the robbery. Investigators are working to learn more details about the gunmen in hopes they will lead to arrests or charges.
