Child dies after being crushed by ceramic tabletop at local church

GREATER GREENSPOINT, Texas – A family and church are grieving the loss of a child after he was crushed to death by a tabletop.

Deputies said the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Signs and Wonders Apostolic Outreach Ministries church in north Harris County near the North Sam Houston Parkway and Ella Boulevard.

According to authorities, the child was playing in a room by himself when the ceramic tabletop fell on top of him.

When authorities arrived at the church, they found a 5-year-old boy who had suffered severe injuries to his chest, deputies said.

The child was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Deputies said the table was in the front portion of the church. Authorities are still investigating to determine the details of what caused the tabletop to fall on the boy.

Authorities have called the incident a terrible accident and do not suspect foul play.

Officials said the building is used for Sunday church services and during the week some space is rented out for other church services.
