Driver of stolen vehicle shot, taken to hospital in critical condition after crash

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A person was taken to an area hospital with a gunshot wound Monday after a crash in north Harris County, according to authorities.

Around 5 p.m., Harris County officials said they were responding to reports of shots fired at the Cranbrook Downs apartments on Ella Boulevard.

Authorities said an unknown person fired multiple shots at a vehicle, causing the vehicle to crash. The driver was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Authorities later said the vehicle was stolen and was used in an aggravated robbery.

It is not clear if the shooter or victim were involved in the robbery or what led up to the shooting.

Chris Sandoval, with the Harris County Sheriff's Office, said authorities are trying to determine how the driver of the car is tied to the shooting.

"We know that the vehicle crashed in the median is reported stolen with the Houston Police Department. It’s a three-day old stolen that was taken in an aggravated robbery. We will be interviewing the individual in the hospital about how he is connected to the car ... how he got it ... how long he's had it. We don’t know if this was a robbery or road rage incident," Sandoval said.

The driver suffered multiple gunshot woulds and has a broken femur. Authorities expect him to survive.
