Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee urges Trump administration to reunite immigrant children with families

HOUSTON – Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, along with community and faith leaders, urged the Trump administration to reunite immigrant children with their families.

Jackson Lee held a news conference Tuesday morning outside a Houston detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue.

Tuesday's deadline to reunite immigrant families was imposed by a federal judge.

A list from the Department of Justice identifies 102 immigrant children under the age of 5 who were separated from adults at the border.

The congresswoman Tuesday voiced her frustration and called for government officials to release information on a tracking system for migrant children who have been separated from family.

"This administration must be held in contempt. I leave here broken-hearted, but not without hope that members of Congress again recognizing our responsibilities to stop the tragedy," Jackson Lee said.

Although only about half of the 100 or so separated children will be reunited, the judge overseeing the case says he was very encouraged by the process.

The Trump administration's next deadline to reunite the other immigrant children is July 26.
