Officer shot in chest gives thumbs up, goes home after shootout in Humble

HUMBLE, Texas – A Humble police officer who was shot in the chest Wednesday after a robbery turned into a chase, left the hospital all smiles.

Reporter Sofia Ojeda was there to greet him with a big hug and ask him if he was OK.

"They didn't get me," officer Cliff Goddard said after raising a thumb to our KPRC 2 cameras.

According to police, the incident started after officers were called just before midnight to a home on North Avenue D for a report of a robbery.

The caller told police the suspects got away in a black Chevy Camaro. Goddard spotted the car on the way to the home and tried to pull over the driver, police said. Instead, the driver sped away, leading Goddard and other officers on a short chase, according to police. 

The chase ended when the suspected robbers crashed the car into a parked vehicle in the parking lot of a Pappas Bar-B-Q on Highway 59, police said. The passenger was arrested, but the driver ran into the parking lot of Taqueria Arandas, police said.

According to investigators, officers used a Taser to try to arrest the driver, but were unsuccessful.

Police said when officers continued to run after the man, he pulled out a gun and started shooting at the officers. Goddard was shot in the chest and arm, police said. Two other officers returned gunfire, hitting the man in the pelvic area, police said.

According to investigators, Goddard, who was not wearing a bulletproof vest, drove himself to Memorial Hermann Northeast Medical Center while the other officers arrested the suspected gunman. 

Goddard was listed in stable condition.

His mother and sister said when he was shot a bullet went through his chest and came out of his arm. Goddard didn't require surgery or stitches. Doctors placed bandages over his wounds and released the 47-year-old officer. 

The robbery suspect was taken to Ben Taub Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken into surgery and was in stable condition.

KPRC spoke to the sister of the person who was robbed.

She said her teenaged brother put his PlayStation on the app Offer Up to sell it.

“My brother went outside around 10:30, he didn’t tell us he put the PlayStation on Offer Up, he said he was just going to sell it to his friend,” said the woman who asked not to be named.

She said she asked her other brother to go after the teen once she realized it wasn’t a friend, but someone through Offer Up.

“This doesn’t sound right, it’s too late,” said the woman in regards to Tuesday night.

They went to down the street, but the two people, whom police would later encounter, stole the PlayStation, according to the older sister.

“I’m really shocked and thankful nothing happened to the police officer or my brother,” said the sister in regards to the police officer surviving his injuries.

The woman burst into tears because she said her family experienced violence in the past when their father was shot and killed 11 years ago.
