HOUSTON – The 98th annual Mayor's Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting took place Friday evening.
Mayor Sylvester Turner kicked off the holiday season at the free event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at City Hall in Hermann Square.
The event is a holiday tradition of music, fireworks and family fun, city officials said. A 65-foot holiday tree twinkling with energy-efficient LED lights, striking ornaments and a sparkling star topper is now lit up in downtown Houston during the holiday season.
Speakers at the event included Turner; Elizabeth Killinger, the president of NRG Retail and Reliant, the event's presenting sponsor; Cheryl Fortune and Kechi Okwuchi.
