PEARLAND, Texas – A congressman’s effort to have a post office in Pearland named after a fallen officer moved one step closer to reality Wednesday.

U.S. Rep. Pete Olson, R-Sugar Land, said his bill that seeks to rename the United Sates Postal Service facility on Cullen Boulevard the “Endy Ekpanya Post Office Building” was moved to the House for a vote.

“Every day our police officers selflessly risk their lives to protect and serve our communities,” Olson said. “Dedicating this post office to Officer Ekpanya is a small gesture to thank him for his unwavering courage and service to the Pearland community. His sacrifice should never be forgotten. On behalf of a grateful community, we will never forget his service and sacrifice."

Ekpanya, 30, was killed in June 2016 when a vehicle driven by Amber Willemsen, 38, crossed the center line and hit the officer’s vehicle head-on.

Willemsen was convicted last month of intoxication manslaughter, and was sentenced to 32 years in prison.
