8-week-old infant mauled, killed by family's dog, officials say

HOUSTON – An 8-week-old baby was killed Friday after being attacked by the family’s dog in north Houston home, officials said

The incident was reported around 5 p.m. in the 5900 block of Nelwyn Street.

Homicide officials are investigating the incident.

BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions has custody of the dogs. Officials said both Schnauzer and Lab dogs were turned over Saturday at 11 a.m. Officials said the dogs will be put down Monday and will be sent to the city's lab to be tested for rabies.

Authorities said Michael James Obergas was left in a secure bedroom when one of the family dogs managed to open the door and attacked the child.

Michael's parents were questioned and released. No charges have been filed at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
