NEW ORLEANS – Houstonians have strong connections to the city of New Orleans. So what happened in the Crescent City 42 years ago today was and still is, a big deal for both cities.

According to the Saints' website, in a section called "Key Moments in Saints History," the first football game ever played in the Superdome was on Aug. 9, 1975.

The New Orleans Saints hosted the Houston Oilers in a preseason matchup.

A big crowd was on hand to watch the Superdome's football debut: 72,434 fans were in attendance.

It was a day of celebration for the city of New Orleans, even though Houston played the spoiler. The Oilers beat the Saints by a score of 13 to 7.
