Syrian refugee finds home in Houston

HOUSTON – A warm welcome was issued from Houston's home team for a woman who never imagined she would end up here.

On Monday night, the Astros honored Dayana Halawo with the ceremonial first pitch.

Halawo, 29, along with her husband and two children, were among the more than 8,900 Syrian refugees who resettled in Texas after fleeing the war-torn country.

They arrived in 2016.

"I traveled to Damascus, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, back to Damascus," she said

She left the only home she'd ever known, but found a new one in Houston.

"It was hard first, but now it's very good and I have a lot of friends that help me and I really appreciate them. They help me so much," Halawo said.

Halawo and her family are being assisted by Amanaah Refugee Services. This is the second year that group has partnered with the Astros.
