9 deaths since 2000 at skydiving company used by man who died in midair collision

BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas – The Brazoria County skydiving company used by a man who died in a midair collision this weekend has had nine deaths since 2000.

The circumstances of the fatal accidents have varied widely over the years, but Skydive Spaceland Houston appears to have a fatality rate on par with national death rates in the adventure sport.

The Rosharon company has hosted an estimated 1.2 million dives, that translate into a better than 99.99 percent survivability rate.

The day after our story aired, Christy West told KPRC2, "We estimate closer to 1.5 million jumps conducted since opening."

In 2016, the United States Parachute Association recorded 21 fatal skydiving accidents out of approximately 3.2 million jumps.

Skydiving fatality rates are among the lowest they have ever been, with a fatal mishap occurring 1 in every 153,557 dives.
