Doctors remove 27 contact lenses from woman's eye

An English woman who was preparing for cataract surgery shocked medical staff when they pulled a total of 27 disposable contact lenses from her eye.

National Public Radio reports the 65-year-old has been using monthly disposable contacts for 35 years.

"When she was seen two weeks after I removed the lenses she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable," specialist trainee ophthalmologist Rupal Morjaria said. "She thought her previous discomfort was just part of old age and dry eye."

Morjaria said she and her colleagues found 17 lenses clumped together as she was injecting anesthesia, and ended up recovering 10 additional lenses. Doctors say the woman didn't complain about any other problems except for cataracts.

The woman's surgery had to be postponed to allow bacteria that had accumulated to clear from her eye.
