Noise from Galleria-area bars forces residents to start petition

HOUSTON – Live music is a component at many venues that are part of the Houston club and restaurant scene, but residents in a Galleria neighborhood say they're fed up with the tunes being pumped out of a couple of establishments on Richmond Avenue.

"As soon as the weather starts to become a little warmer, we start to hear that there is a live concert almost every night," homeowner Brenno Giannini said.

The residents are pointing the finger at The Pub Galleria and Sam's Boat.

Homeowners, including Giannini, who lives more than two blocks from the businesses, said lately, the music from the two locations has been unbearable and has continued late into the evening.

Giannini shared cellphone video taken late this week with Channel 2 in which you can hear music from one of the restaurants loud and clear.

"Inside, even the volume of your TV can't keep up with the noise," Giannini said. "As you know, the bass are very strong."

Channel 2 spoke to the managers at both businesses.

Neither one would go on camera, but both said they usually stay at or below the city-mandated decibel levels, although the manager at The Pub Galleria admitted their decibel levels are higher for patrons standing at the front of the restaurant's stage.

In the meantime, neighbors have started a petition to force the businesses to turn down the volume.

"We respect the business. I think everybody needs to do the business. We don't want to shut down anybody," Giannini said.

Unless you receive a special permit, the city of Houston does not allow non-residential properties to exceed 68 decibels at any time.

Residential properties must stay at or below 65 decibels from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. or 58 decibels from 10:01 p.m. to 7:59 a.m.
