Bird causes temporary power outage in Galveston County, officials say

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas – Residents in Dickinson and surrounding cities, including Texas City and League City, can sleep peacefully Sunday night with electricity after a bird caused a major power outage earlier in the afternoon.

Texas New Mexico Power Company has restored power for 86,000 residents in Galveston County after a bird hit a line in a substation.

As crews worked to get the power restored, the Office of  Emergency Management opened a cooling center at Hughes Road Elementary School in Dickinson.

Some residents told KPRC2 they were lucky enough to escape the Texas summer heat by staying at the home of relatives house who weren’t affected by the power outage.

Power was back on for all residents by 6 p.m.
