Near Northside neighborhood targeted by graffiti vandal

HOUSTON – Residents of Houston's Near Northside community hope surveillance video will lead police to the person they believe is responsible for tagging a church, several homes, and at least one vehicle with anti-Christian graffiti.

Tags in red and green covered Bible Days Church, on the 500 block of Quitman Street, near North Main.

"I was upset. You're upset anytime you see someone else's property," said Pastor Anthony Wilcots, Bible Days Church.

Lionardo Matamores, who lives one block from the church, scrubbed tagging from his bench. He said after noticing the vandalism Wednesday morning he drove around his neighborhood to see if anyone else was targeted.

"Tagged the four units across the street from me and some neighbors on Church Street. And I drove around the block and they tagged the parking lot at White Oak Music Hall, Matamores told KPRC2.

A neighbor released surveillance video showing the man they said is responsible. Two clips show the person walking around the time buildings and a truck were vandalized: 6 a.m. Wednesday. One clip showed what neighbors said is a can of spray paint in the man's hand.

Houston police are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
