Click2Daily: Kayaking tour of Houston's Buffalo Bayou

HOUSTON – The Buffalo Bayou is Ken Jacobs’ office. He works for Bayou City Adventures.

Nearly every day he introduces people to a part of Houston that even native Houstonians might never see.

“It’s completely different than a 9 to 5 job,” said Jacobs. “If you like nature, this is one easy way to enjoy it. You come out here. It’s shaded, sunny, shaded, sunny."

Jacobs took KPRC 2 Reporter Ryan Korsgard on a tour down the bayou on a kayak. He leaks public and private tours. Bayou City Adventures www.bayoucityadventures.org also has kayak and paddle board rentals available at its Lost Lake Visitor Center in Buffalo Bayou Park along Allen Parkway.

Even if you have walked, cycled or run through the park, people rarely see it from the perspective of a boat in the bayou.

“There’s tons of people out here, especially on the weekends when I get to do this the most,” Jacobs said.

You quickly see there is a lot of nature. During our trip from the visitor center east on the bayou to downtown, we saw ducks, snakes, a beaver and dozens of turtles.

There are also a lot of people checking out your tour, too.

“You wave at them. They wave back. There’s all kinds of friendly people out here,” Jacobs said.

It was not until we were under the bridges downtown that we heard or saw many signs of civilization.

Our trip took us under bridges and into a different world that lives just a few feet away from the downtown skyscrapers of America’s fourth largest city.

“If we’re actually out here, we pull our boats up on the bank if we’re on a tour or something like that, tons of people stop and ask us, how can we get in one of these?” Jacobs said.
