Houstonians celebrate Cinco de Mayo Day at parade downtown

HOUSTON – For some Houstonians, the Cinco de Mayo Day parade is a celebration of culture and heritage, but to others it's a celebration of the past.

Cinco de Mayo is significant because the Mexican army was victorious over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, which was more than 100 years ago.

On Saturday, Houstonians from all walks of life and cultures gathered as people played music, danced and marched down the streets of downtown.

The League of United Latin American Citizens hosted the parade and Richard Carranza, the Houston Independent School District superintendent was the grand marshal.
