Click2Daily: Kegg's Candies behind the scenes

HOUSTON – It was the year President Donald Trump was born, the first microwave oven was sold, doughnuts cost about 15 cents per dozen and here in Houston, Kegg's Candies first opened its doors.

Since 1946 the chocolate factory, now located at 8168 A Westpark Drive, has been crafting mouthwatering chocolate and confections for anyone with a sweet tooth. It began when the Kegg Brothers started experimenting with chocolate candy recipes in their mother's kitchen.

After perfecting their recipes, Robert Kegg set up his first shop in Rice Village. Since then the candy shop has become a Houston institution, known for its signature Pecan Crisp, chocolate boxed assortments and fudge. Today they make more than 1,500 types of sweet treats.

According to its website, today Kegg's Candies is Houston's only local "true" full-line chocolate manufacturing business.

“It’s seven generations of chocolate here and it’s all made from scratch,” retail manager Colleen Steele said. “That’s very hard to find these days.”

“I love candy, that’s the reason I’m here,” production manager Manny Bethencourt said. “Sometimes I try to create something different and it makes me happy when the customers are happy.”

In addition to the factory on Westpark Drive, the company also has a retail store at 4934 Beechnut Street.
