Detectives determined that Cervantes had sex with the underage student twice and sent sexually explicit text messages to another female student, police said.

Cervantes was charged with sexual assault of a child, online solicitation of a minor and two counts of improper educator-student relationship.

Galveston ISD officials said in a statement that Cervantes was placed on administrative leave when the allegations came to light, and he later resigned.

The full Galveston ISD statement follows:

"Upon learning of alleged inappropriate contact with a Galveston Ball HS student, school officials immediately placed a Galveston ISD employee on administrative leave. The employee has since resigned and the alleged conduct continues to be under investigation. We take this matter very seriously, and we are deeply concerned that it appears something of this nature and this seriousness has happened at one of our schools and to one of our students.

"Galveston ISD and the Galveston Police Department are working closely to maintain a safe and secure environment for all our students."
