How to deal with kids' Halloween candy tantrums

The Halloween holiday is stressful for parents and kids, sometimes because of temper tantrums.

The scary monsters and goblin costumes disguising your kids this Halloween might just become a reality when they hit a sugar high.

“They scream and they’re on the floor,” Dr. Sadiya Jamal from Kelsey Seybold n the Woodlands said. “They want their next fix.”

Jamal said the sugar high can heighten emotions of everyone in the house. So, before you hit that, she says to cut them off.

“First of all, take the candy away,” she said.

Jamal suggests having a game plan ready.

“We’re going to do one piece a day or we’re going to do one piece if you do this, you can use it as a reward if you want.”

That plan can include things like a buyback program. A lot of local children’s dentists will pay your kids for their candy.

Plus, with upcoming holidays you can save the candy for crafts, like a gingerbread house!

Also, make sure your kids aren’t trick or treating on an empty stomach. They’ll be more likely to gorge on candy and be more cranky if they’re hungry.

Then, she said you want to give them a warm bath, something soothing, calming them down to get ready for bed.
