Anteater pup hitches ride on mom at Houston Zoo

Rio born at zoo Sept. 3

HOUSTON – A giant anteater pup has made its debut at the Houston Zoo all while hitching a ride on mom.

Rio was born on Sept. 3 to parents Olive and Pablo, but zookeepers are allowing time for the family to bond before they determine the sex of the pup.

Experts said giant anteater pups typically spend their first few weeks clinging to their mothers. They’ll usually then ride on their mom’s back for nearly a year.

Giant anteaters typically live for 16 years and are native to Central America and South America.
