HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – An Independence Day vandalism spree at two northwest Harris County apartment complexes has tallied dozens of victims.
Vandals smashed car windows. A lot of car windows.
Cypress Parc Apartment Homes on 18001 Cypress Trace Road, in Northwest Harris County and Portofino Landing at 910 Cypress Station were targeted about 3 a.m. July 4.
"Both of my windows, probably like $600," Isaiah Carter, a tenant at Cypress Parc, said.
Few residents reported anything of value missing, although there are items that were stolen, according to some people.
"I'm guessing it was a 4th of July prank," Carter said.
An on-scene Harris County deputy estimated that more than 40 cars may have been targeted.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office could not provide an official total on Monday, and calls were still coming in from victims Monday afternoon, according to a deputy.
"That's a bad prank, not a good idea. If somebody would have come outside, things could have gone south for them real easily," Xavier Canto, also a Cypress Parc resident, said.
No eyewitnesses appear to have gotten a good look at the perpetrators, although one tenant said that he thought he saw three young males leaving the scene in an SUV.
It was not the perfect crime.
Blood was found at one of the scenes, and apartment security cameras may have caught the vandals on camera, although another resident was not sure if the camera actually worked, and complained the front security gate is often left open.
Attempts to reach management at Cypress Parc via phone were unsuccessful Monday.
