Witnesses said the victim went into the water to swim with friends when he suddenly disappeared. Investigators said the group wasn't far from shore, and the man was swimming in fairly shallow waters.
The victim's family said they called for help, but were told there were no life guards at the beach. The family said the man would have lived had life guards been on the scene.
Banana Bend is a popular portion of the San Jacinto River, where families are allowed to swim, picnic and enjoy other water activities.
Deputies described the victim as an "older gentleman."
