HOUSTON – A woman was hurt during a massive apartment fire early Sunday morning in southwest Houston.
The Houston Fire Department said the fire broke out around 1 a.m. on Essex Lane and Weslayan St.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames coming from the third floor and in the garage area.
"One of the neighbors was running around, pounding on everybody's door and just yelling out fire," Luke Bryant said. "Thankfully he woke up a lot of people and then I think some others came out right after us."
Crews had to call for back up to get the fire under control. At one point, there were 152 firefighters on the scene.
"It's still hot out here," Joey Evans with the Houston Fire Department said. "This was a tremendous amount of flames. The fire was through the roof when the first crew got here."
Fire officials said a 50 year old woman was found unconscious from smoke inhalation and she was rushed to the hospital. She is said to be in stable condition.
The fire was declared under control around 3 a.m.
Around 20 to 25 units were impacted by the blaze and the department’s arson bureau will be investing this fire.
