HOUSTON – Houston police are investigating after two people were found inside a barricaded motel room. The man and woman were staying at a Palace Inn off Beltway 8 near Westview.
Police said the couple checked into the motel on Monday. Motel staff called police Tuesday afternoon when the couple failed to check out and did not answer a knock at the door.
"When they arrived, officers and maintenance tried to make entry to the room, they found it to be barricaded," Officer K. Ferguson said.
When officers couldn't get past the furniture blocking the door, a motel employee broke the window, Ferguson said. Inside, they found a man, a woman, 27, and a gun.
"Found one male suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head," said Ferguson.
Ferguson said despite the shot to the head, the man was still alive and was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition. The woman was dead, but detectives aren't yet sure how she died.
The identities of the man and woman have not been released pending the families being notified.
