Church catches fire in Lake Jackson

ANGLETON, Texas – The Angleton Volunteer Fire Department and six other agencies responded to a fire Thursday evening at the First Christian Church of Lake Jackson, authorities said.

Firefighters said the incident, which started around 6 p.m., left a combination of fire and smoke damage inside the building.

Fortunately, authorities said the church wasn't completely lost.

According to officials, no one was hurt and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Residents stood outside the church as it burned — many took pictures that were latter shared with TheFacts.com.

The photos showed firefighters using ladders and axes to access the building's roof as smoke filled the area. 

According to TheFacts.com, one picture showed Cynthia Myers, the church's pastor, being consoled by a friend while fire crews worked in the background.

Dozens flocked to a post about the incident on Facebook, sending their condolences and sharing their prayers.

"That is my pastor. and that is my church," one user said. "That is my childhood church, the church I got married in and the church my son was baptized in this past Easter Sunday. I am sad and speechless."
