Grandmother, man, baby barely escape northeast Houston apartment fire

HOUSTON – A grandmother said she, her cousin and an 8-month-old baby barely made it out of an apartment fire in northeast Houston alive.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. Tuesday. Emergency crews worked to extinguish the flames in the building in the 3500 block of Brewster Street.

The family who was inside the home at the time of the fire made it out safely. Jeanetta Davis, the grandmother, said she was sleeping and woke up to flames.

"I heard some banging next door, and when I opened my eyes and I seen the wall was on fire," Jeanetta Davis said. "I woke my little cousin, and I said 'Josh! Josh! The house is on fire!'"

Although Davis, her cousin and his baby were alert, they were still trapped.

"He said, 'Hold my baby,'" Davis said. "So I hold the baby, and I don't know how that door (opened) -- but he got us out of here."

Three units were damaged in the fire, officials said. Davis said she lost everything. A GoFundMe page has
been created to help the family get a new home.

The family said the unit closest to the street is abandoned, but sometimes people hang out inside.

"The landlord needs to do something about these apartments over here," Jeanetta Davis' daughter, Alicia Davis, said. "He's not taking care of his business over here. These apartments aren't really livable and he's
taking people's money."

Investigators still are looking into the cause of the fire.
