HOUSTON – A man has been pulled over in Gainesville in connection to a car that was stolen from a car wash. The car has been impounded, but there are no formal charges.
The victim in the case hasn't gotten her car back.
"You don't expect to get your car stolen," she said.
The woman asked Channel 2 not to use her name. She's the victim of a recent carjacking and wants to speak out about the bizarre way her SUV was stolen.
She said she dropped off her Volkswagen Touareg at Aqua Hand Car Wash and Detail in Montrose. When she returned an hour later, it wasn't there.
"He looks at his clipboard and says they gave it to my husband," she said. "I'm in shock and thinking, 'This can't be right.'"
She said her husband didn't pick up the SUV. Workers at the car wash said a man who had been hanging around the area frantically ran up and told them it was his car they were cleaning. They said he claimed his wife was in labor and he needed the SUV to take her to the hospital. He handed the worker $20, jumped in the car and drove off.
"We've changed a couple of things to ensure the safety of our customers' cars so this won't happen in the future," said car wash owner Kevin Kamrath.
Research shows this type of incident has happened at other car washes. Workers have to be careful and owners should keep an eye out for threats.
