TRINITY, Texas – Trinity police are searching for a man who fled after a confrontation with authorities.

An officer saw a sexual assault suspect in the Rudy's parking lot at 1:17 a.m. Wednesday, police said. The officer made contact in an attempt to question the suspect in reference to an ongoing investigation.

Police said during this contact, the officer noticed a rifle in the truck. Brent Singleton was not the sexual assault suspect, but he was driving the suspect around, according to Trinity police.

The officer was aware of Singleton's recent felony arrest history. While attempting to confirm if Singleton was a felon or not, police said Singleton ran from the officer and was able to escape.

The officer and a Trinity County sheriff’s deputy went to a home in the 100 block of Israel Otis Street at 2:26 a.m. to find Singleton. Police said Singleton raised a rifle and confronted the deputy inside the home.

The deputy and officer took cover in an attempt to evaluate the situation. Police said they were confronted a second time by Singleton outside of the home.

Singleton confronted and raised his rifle at the officers a second time, police said. Fearing their life was in danger, both officers opened fire towards Singleton, according to Trinity police.

Singleton fled the scene and was able to escape. Police said it was not clear if Singleton was hurt following the confrontation.

Police said a warrant has been issued for Singleton's arrest, charging him with felony 1 aggravated assault of a public servant. Other authorities arrived in an attempt to find Singleton, but he was not found.

Residents reported to police at 10:11 a.m. that a suspect matching Singleton's profile was walking in the alley behind several homes off West San Jacinto Street, police said. The citizens said the suspect was carrying a rifle with a scope. An officer responded to the area, but was unable to find him.

Police said Singleton is currently out on bail in regards to other felony charges. Singleton was arrested and charged with felony 2 aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on March 10, and he was arrested for felony bond forfeiture: original charge possession of a controlled substance on Oct. 23, according to police.

Police consider Singleton armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees him is advised to not attempt to make contact with him and to notify local law enforcement agency.
