HOUSTON – Just beyond the Rio Grande River bed, in a city once known to be one of the most dangerous in the world, a figure of peace watches over this community.
Ciudad Juarez prepares for Pope Francis' visit on Wednesday, on the last day of his trip to Mexico.
Meanwhile, across the border in El Paso, travelers from cities as far as Atlanta touch down in the borderland to cross into Juarez ahead of the Pope's visit.
A group of 20 worshipers from Atlanta told us it's their duty as Catholics to make the trip to Juarez.
"It's something very spiritual for us. Our faith brings us here," said Guille Martinez from Atlanta.
Mauricio Romero and his wife came to El Paso from Sugarland. They too began their journey across the border for the pope's visit. The Romeros are hoping they can snag a spot at his mass on Wednesday.
Pope Francis is scheduled to visit a state prison in Ciudad Juarez and meet with factory workers and employers.
He takes off for Rome Wednesday night.
