Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo prohibits concealed and open carry of handguns

Private citizens will not be allowed to bring to any guns, concealed or open carry, to this year's Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

"The decision is not to allow either concealed carry or open carry firearms on our grounds during the 2016 show. We did not allow concealed carry last year so this just extends it to open carry," president and CEO of the rodeo Joel Cowley said. "We expend a lot on security...everyone should feel safe on out grounds."

Officials released the following statement on Tuesday.

"The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, in an effort to provide a safe environment and promote a family-friendly atmosphere at the city’s iconic entertainment event, will prohibit concealed and open carry of handguns by private citizens at the 2016 Show."

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo runs Tuesday, March 1, through Sunday, March 20. Click here for more information about the rodeo.
