HOUSTON – At Brooks' BBQ Place in Cypress there are all sorts of signs for customers to read.
One says "No Pets Allowed." Another reads "Pull your pants up." But it's the new signs that inform customers they can openly carry weapons, that is apparently the source of a lot of tension.
On Thursday morning owner Trent Brooks found a disturbing post on his Facebook page. It reads, "I'll shoot up the place on Saturday. Let's see how your gun toting patrons will stop me."
"I took it very seriously, with all the mass shootings and everything that has been going on as of late," Brooks, who filed a police report, said.
Brooks has long supported gun rights, even offering discounts to customers who carry guns, but he says he never intended for this to happen.
"We're not doing this as a political statement," Brooks said. "We believe in the open carry law because it protects the gun owner."
Despite the threat, Brooks said he has no regrets about his support for the second amendment and he won't let it prevent customers from getting in line for some BBQ.
"We're going to do what we do. We're going to continue to cook. We're going to serve our customers and this is not going to stop us from opening up on a normal day," Brooks said.
He said he will be open regular hours this Saturday, from 11 a.m. until he runs out of meat. Extra security will be on hand as a precaution.
